CHAPELIZOD HOUSING

Type:  Refurbishment and Extension

Status:  Completed 2019

Location: Chapelizod, Dublin

An existing set of four accommodation chalets for the order of nuns, who run an adjacent nursing home, had become unfit for purpose. We were commissioned to renovate a number of the existing one-bed units and form an additional common space, where the whole order could congregate for dinner and other occasions. New coloured entrances distinctly identify each accommodation unit, while the common room is distinguished by a modern brickwork interpretation to the rear. Traditional English garden wall bond has been explored and expressed through the use of coloured brickwork. Simple filigree steel-work elements form a connecting external walkway and privacy screen to the common room. The hard-work of the resident nuns with the surrounding gardening allows the interventions to nestle well into the surrounding landscape of the nursing home.
